On Tuesday October 20, the John Burton Foundation and the Children’s Law Center co-hosted a web seminar to explain the new law that provides parenting Non-Minor Dependents living in a Supervised Independent Living Placement (SILP) an additional $200 supplement.

Just Use Condom Sense! Birth Control Basics for Child Welfare Workers, Probation Officers, Attorneys and CASAs

Senior Health Educator Antonia Landels led an hour long training to familiarize child welfare practitioners with the most up to date information about contraceptive methods. Through this web seminar, Antonia will help participants feel more comfortable and informed to broach the topic with youth and also learn about some key youth-friendly resources available.

Reducing Unplanned Pregnancy and Strengthening Academic Achievement Web Seminar on August 19, 2015

This web seminar provided content on the long term implications of early pregnancy on higher education completion. The presentation included content presented by Andrea Kane from the National Campaign to Prevent Unplanned Teen Pregnancy. She highlights helpful tools and ways to communicate with foster youth in college or seeking to enroll in college about pregnancy prevention.

Overview of Pregnancy Prevention Training Web Seminar on May 11, 2015

This web seminar provided a brief overview of the June and July pregnancy prevention trainings offered by the John Burton Foundation. The training offered were a Train the Trainer for the social worker and caregiver training “Promoting Healthy Sexual Development and Pregnancy Prevention for Children and Youth in Foster Care” and the “Pregnant and Parenting Youth” Conference model from LA DCFS.

May 19, 2015 Women’s Caucus Briefing

Improving Access to Reproductive Health Services and Information to Foster Youth

The Legislative Women’s Caucus and the John Burton Foundation co-hosted a legislative briefing at the State Capitol to discuss the barriers to serving foster youth with regards to reproductive health services and information. The briefing included a research presentation from Dr. Emily Putnam Hornstein from the Children’s Data Network on the disproportionate rates of pregnancy among foster youth and maltreatment experienced by their children. It was followed by a discussion on minor consent laws presented by Rebecca Gudeman from the National Center for Youth Law. Santa Clara and Napa county participants from the Institute also conveyed their experiences working with foster youth on the ground and their current efforts to reduce STI and pregnancy rates for foster youth.

Reproductive Health and Sex Education Services for Youth in Foster Care: Access Laws

This web seminar provides an overview of minor consent laws and confidentiality laws in California pertaining to foster youth and reproductive health and sex education services. The content aims to guide those in the child welfare field as well as medical providers who work with foster youth. The seminar is presented by Rebecca Gudeman, Senior Attorney at the National Center for Youth Law.

Understanding Practice Strategies 1 & 2: Focus on Foster Youth and Social Worker Training

This web seminar will provide a comprehensive look at two of the four practice strategies offered by the Institute. The first presenters will discuss their experience, in Buncombe County, NC, implementing Making Proud Choices for Youth in Out-of-Home Care (MPC+). The second presenters will discuss the development and implementation of Illinois’ Preventing Pregnancy and Promoting Sexual Health among Youth in Care social worker and caregiver training.
